PLANE CRASH
Plane Crash Leads to an Unbelievable Survival Story
Do you have aerophobia? Well, in case you do, you might want to sit this plane crash story out.
A nice cruise through the sky is something everyone craves. The sight of being thousands of feet in the air, where the entire world seems so small as you navigate through the cottony clouds in the vast blue sky. It is one of the best feelings in the world and it is sad that until now, only a small proportion of humans who have ever lived have gotten to experience the thrill and the ecstasy that comes with being so high in the sky. The feeling is one of unparalleled joy and awe; both in equal measures.
But for some, the thought of flight brings fear, distress, and an eerie sense of unease. They will always feel on edge like something bad is about to happen. For this reason, they might develop air sickness and keep the paper bag nearby just to be safe. They will feel threatened in an instant if the pilot makes an announcement of turbulence in the air; recoiling in their seats and holding back their prayers, hoping that they won’t need them.
Then the pilot will come back on the line and tell everyone that the turbulence has passed and that they can unfasten their seatbelts. Thank God! right! because the skeptics had already begun reaching for the safety manual and looking outside the windows to examine the condition of the wings; though they know nothing about aerodynamics.
1. A plane crash like no other
Sometimes, however, this unnecessary fear and constant anxiety is a good thing. Humans are the only species that are able to contemplate the notion of death. So, it makes sense then, that they do whatever they can to dispel that notion from their mind, and keep themselves assured that everything is OK. But fear is, at the end of the day, what kept our ancestors alive.
Being afraid of the right things helped them overcome a lot of unwanted trouble. They understood to stay away from dangerous creatures, to gather only certain mushrooms, and to domesticate only certain horses. Fear is always a good indicator that you need a reality check. As you will soon see, the case that is presented is equally horrifying and strangely uplifting:
2. How it started
In the early hours of a cold winter night of October 1972, a team of rugby players were scheduled to make a flight from their country of Uruguay to the capital of a neighboring country; Santiago in Chile. The plane comprised several passengers besides the team members themselves, including the family of some of the members, coaches, and a medical crew, to ensure that the team was in mint condition. They took off, and soon, mid-flight, they hit some turbulence.
That’s alright because it was hardly the first time that they had experienced a shaky flight. The turbulence then subsided for a brief moment and everyone got back to talking and drinking as if nothing had happened. The delay was the only reprieve they thought would get so far. But then, the turbulence hit back, with an even stronger effect on the aircraft, making it go almost topsy turvy before plummeting toward the earth.
The people on board were screaming, some praying, and others sinking deep into their seats, with their hands clenching the sides of their seats in an effort to contain as much of the initial impact as they could. Just then, a sudden surge of cold air blasted through the fuselage and much to the dismay of those on board, it would have seemed that a big portion of the stern of the ship had been snapped off because of the mechanical vibrations associated with strong turbulence. Their skin grew cold and before long, there came the inevitable boom! The plane had struck on a completely deserted island. No vegetation nor inhabitants. Just nothing.
3. Fear to Fruition
At this point, only half of the plane remained with half of the passengers as the other half had been torn out and fallen away.
From the wreckage of the main hald, only a few of the members survived. Many injured, others shocked, and one in a coma. Surprisingly, and very luckily, this one gave up his window seat for his friend who wanted to enjoy the mountain view. Thus he ended up with the half that survived. But surviving has been a true hell on its own. After going through all the cases in search of food, and trying to eat parts of the plane, the coma guy suggested that they’d eat the pilot! As savage as it sounds, most of them agreed as a desperate final resort to cling to life. Those who thought eating human flesh was immoral, passed away very soon.
But even if they eat all the soulless bodies, they still had to find a way out of there. So the coma guy and two of his friends decided to go explore, especially when they recalled hearing the pilot and co-pilot reporting that they were only a few minutes away from their destination. Little did they know that it was so many miles away. And thus, they went on, challenging snow and the freezing temperature, until they reached a river after walking about eight days and suffering from huge body mass loss and extreme exhaustion.
On the other side of the river, there was one man! They waved at him and he threw them a rock with a white paper and pen attached to it. They wrote that they’ve been lost for god knows how many days and that there are other people alive. The man went to find help, and after a few days, a rescuing crew arrived to collect the thin and weak bodies of the brave survivors.
After getting home and recovering, the survivors were blamed harshly and called savages for feeding on human flesh, but they explained that it was their only means of survival. Had they not defy their morals, they’d be buried under the snow right now.
